Concerned citizen group settles EPA litigation on pesticides

Pesticides can sometimes have unintended effects on the environment. When concerned citizens believe that the government isn't doing enough to protect the environment they might be able to take legal action.

The Center for Biological Diversity and the Pesticide Action Network filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to try to increase regulatory enforcement on pesticides that might be harming California red-legged frog populations. A settlement was recently reached that gives the Fish and Wildlife Service and the EPA two years to study how pesticides might affect the natural environment of these amphibians.

The settlement would require the EPA and the Fish and Wildlife Service to consult on their findings, which could lead to permanent bans on seven pesticides. As a result of an earlier court order, some restrictions have been put in place but they are considered temporary.

When a group of citizens has an environmental concern, they might be wise to speak with an experienced environmental law attorney. Government agencies can sometimes be slow to comply with enacted laws, and this can cause damage to the environment. Pursuing litigation against the government or corporations can help ensure the environment is protected for years to come. This can also open up investigations and research that might help groups understand what damage might be happening in the environment.

It is important that individuals are able to assert their rights to protect the environment. An attorney can help ensure those rights are protected.
