Facing a lawsuit against the company that you’ve worked so hard to build can be a challenge, especially if you’ve never been in this position before. It’s imperative that you take the time to learn what steps you need to take now that you’re in this position. One of the top priorities now is to protect the company that you worked so hard to build.

The first thing that you need to do is to contact your attorney. The lawyer you choose should be able to protect your interests. You shouldn’t make any statements or do anything else related to the lawsuit unless you ask your attorney about it first. Try to remain calm as you develop a plan with your lawyer.

Another thing to remember is that you’re going to have some emotional reactions to the lawsuit. This is normal, but you need to try to address those upfront and in private. Having an emotional breakdown at work or in public because of the lawsuit might not help your position at all.

Remember that a lawsuit doesn’t automatically mean that you’re going through a trial. Instead, you may be able to handle the matter outside of the court system. Around 95% of lawsuits are handled this way, so discuss the possibility with your attorney if this is something you’re interested in.

As you’re thinking about the resolution, remember that you have to do what’s best for the company. This might mean that you have to think about all the possible solutions because you may realize that what you want to happen isn’t actually what’s best. You have to consider the long term implications of any resolution that’s offered to you.
